1. 850nm VCSEL SMD Series for Compact PCB Integration

The 850nm 5mW–20mW VCSEL SMD Series includes three near-infrared VCSEL products in a compact 2835 surface-mount package.
Available optical-output options include:
  • 850nm 5mW 2835 VCSEL SMD
  • 850nm 10mW 2835 VCSEL SMD
  • 850nm 20mW 2835 VCSEL SMD
All three products use a compact 850nm 2835 VCSEL package designed for surface-mount PCB integration.
The products share the same nominal 850nm wavelength, 2835 package format and 7mil × 7mil internal VCSEL chip size. They provide different optical-output and drive-current levels for sensing, machine vision, industrial optical detection and compact PCB-mounted NIR source development.
The 2835 SMD package supports automated PCB placement and reflow-soldering processes. Compared with an unpackaged VCSEL bare die, the packaged format reduces customer-side die attachment and wire-bonding work.
The series is intended for pulsed or QCW operation. Each optical-output value must be interpreted together with the corresponding current, pulse width and duty cycle.
Primary development directions include:
  • Near-infrared sensing
  • Machine-vision source development
  • Industrial optical detection
  • Compact PCB-mounted NIR sources
  • Engineering and research prototypes

The optical-output ratings apply only under the specified operating conditions.
Increasing the drive current, pulse width or duty cycle beyond the specified condition can increase junction temperature and may affect optical output, wavelength, electrical performance and reliability.
Beam divergence is specified using the D86 definition, based on the angular range containing approximately 86% of the measured optical power.
The listed D86 values should not be interpreted as FWHM beam-divergence values.

The surface-mount VCSEL package supports automated pick-and-place assembly and PCB-level reflow soldering.
PCB and module design should consider:
  • Correct anode and cathode orientation
  • Recommended solder-pad dimensions
  • Drive-current routing
  • Current limiting
  • Pulse-control accuracy
  • Package clearance
  • Optical opening above the VCSEL
  • ESD protection
  • PCB thermal structure
  • External lens or optical-window placement
The top optical surface should not be pressed, scratched or contaminated during handling and assembly.
The products are ESD-sensitive semiconductor devices. Appropriate electrostatic protection should be used during storage, placement, soldering, electrical testing and module assembly.
Reflow-soldering conditions and handling precautions should follow the corresponding product datasheet and the customer’s validated manufacturing process.

5. Product Selection and Application Development

The appropriate 850nm VCSEL SMD should be selected according to the required received optical signal, working distance, detector sensitivity, pulse condition and available drive current.

Select the 5mW Version When:

  • Low operating current is important
  • The optical path is relatively short
  • Receiver sensitivity is sufficient
  • A lower duty cycle is required
  • Initial sensing or optical-source evaluation is being performed

Select the 10mW Version When:

  • More received optical power is required than the 5mW version provides
  • A moderate drive current is acceptable
  • The system uses a 0.5ms pulse width and 10% duty cycle
  • A balanced output and current level is preferred

Select the 20mW Version When:

  • The highest output in the current 2835 series is required
  • The optical path or working distance requires stronger pulsed output
  • The driver can supply a controlled 28mA pulse current
  • The package size must remain consistent with the lower-power versions
Typical development directions include:
  • Near-infrared sensing
  • Proximity and presence detection
  • Machine-vision source development
  • Industrial optical detection
  • Compact active NIR illumination
  • PCB-mounted optical-source modules
  • Engineering and research systems
For sensing and machine-vision projects, product selection should consider receiver response, working distance, illuminated area, pulse synchronization, external optics and required field of view.
